SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE / The Ethiopia Edition / Recap

IMG_2185

Our most recent SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE performance at Tropicalia, where we fused our musical influences from our trip to Ethiopia, was our best SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE performance (to date) and most definitely ranks up there as one of our top SHAOLIN JAZZ events, period.  I can’t front, there were some elements of our production that we were late in cementing, but MAN did things work out!

Thanks to all of those who attended, props to Tropicalia for hosting us, salute to everyone that performed – giving the show the diversity and flavor that we were looking to create: Sound of the City, Wayna, Asheru and Rock, and Ras Nebyu and special thanks to everyone who helped to promote our show.  For more recap photos click Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE – The Ethiopia Edition / Wayna

Untitled-1Meet Wayna, a highly notable Grammy nominated singer/songwriter who will be performing this Saturday at our SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE – The Ethiopia Edition live performance at Tropicalia.  Wayna, who is of Ethiopian descent, was part of the team that traveled with us to Addis, and was hugely instrumental in the success that we had there.

How has your environment influenced your music?

It has given me the life experiences from which I draw the subject matter and values, which influence the music profoundly.

How do you feel about hip-hop culture and if you’re a fan, have you incorporated it into your music?

I became a fan, after working with so many hip-hop purists.  I have incorporated in my work the storyteller style of writing, improvisation, and some poetic techniques.

Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances 1920 DC has closed, and after months of searching 2-Tone and I finally found a spot to host our Hip-Hop happy hour series – Tropicalia.

We’re hopeful this one picks up where our De La happy hour left off and we’ve also (via Madison Davenport PR) linked up with the cats at Leroy Jenkins Limited who’ll be exhibiting their THE ROOTS inspired artwork.
