CAN I KICK IT? / feat The Warriors / 7.10.19

We’re pleased to announce that we’re finally bringing CAN I KICK IT? to NYC and we’ll be conducting it three times through the course of the summer and for our first trip we’re excited to be conducting it as apart of an organization called Hudson River Park for two dates of their popular outdoor series: Hudson RiverFlicks.

For our first date, Wed July 10th, we’ll be screening the ultimate O.G. New York (and hip-hop) classic The Warriors.  And if you attended our sold-out screening of this film last year at The Kennedy Center then you already know how we completely changed how you understand this film and for this upcoming screening we promise that we will do the same times two!

We have a couple of surprises that will be announced later, but the film will start at 8:30 PM and these events are free/open to the public.

CAN I KICK IT? / feat The Warriors at The Kennedy Center / Recap

Our CAN I KICK IT? event at The Kennedy Center is, hands down, one of our biggest events to date.  The outdoors series at Freedom Plaza that we’ve done with the Downtown DC BID also shares that space.  And as cliche as it sounds, its hard to put into words the feeling that we got and how amazing the experience was the day of when 2-Tone dropped the needle and the movie started.

Let me be clear, there was an enormous amount of work that went into every component of the production: the design of the promo materials and the actual promotion of them/the event, the stage design and the careful selection and placement of all of the items, the countless hours (even months) 2-Tone spent curating just the right music for just the right scene.  There was a lot to consider and it all led to a remarkable experience that no one, who attended, will ever forget and it also led to us selling out The Kennedy Center’s 450+ seat Terrace Theater.

This experience has been an eye-opener on so many levels including understanding that part of what we’re doing furthers the culture that we love: Hip-Hop.  And to think – SHAOLIN JAZZ started in 2011 as an idea for just a mixtape and has grown into something that has graced the halls of a venue as prestigious as The Kennedy Center.  But don’t get it twisted, there’s so much more work to be done.

Thank you to Simone Eccleston for giving us a shot and props to her production team for all of their efforts.  Thanks to Maishah and Ja’Mon for going above and beyond with our merch table and for providing a warm welcome to all of our attendees.  Props to RBI and Roddy (and Choppy), along with 2-Tone, for blessing the show with that dope DJ frenzy.  Salute to the radio shows who let 2-Tone and I on and to everyone who helped to spread the word, left a positive comment, etc…regardless if you did or didn’t attend.  And of course thank you to everyone who attended (including friends and family) and helped sell-out the show.  Your support is more than appreciated.

SOUND PATTERNS / The Warriors Art Exhibition / Recap

Despite all of the moving parts that came with conducting CAN I KICK IT? at The Kennedy Center, we also decided to conduct our SOUND PATTERNS Art Exhibition, the day before, which would feature art inspired by The Warriors movie.  The exhibition went well.

We featured six artists from previous SOUND PATTERNS shows and one new one, which included Nick Tha 1da, Makeba Rainey, John Ortiz, Brody Rose, Josue Martinez, and Kojo Boateng.  The show, which will be on display till December 20th at the Victor L Selman Gallery (3305 8th St NE), is of a cohesive yet unique variety with some artists also drawing from personal experiences to help drive their pieces.  A viewing of the show is via appointment only: Mon-Fri 10 am – 3 pm and Thurs 10 am – 7 pm.  If interested email: info@shaolinjazz.com.

Our SOUND PATTERNS exhibition also provided an opportunity for us to connect with fans who both could and could not attend Saturday’screening while also serving as a platform to educate people who were unfamiliar with our event at The Kennedy Center, which led to last minute ticket sales – ultimately leading us to selling out the Terrace Theater.

Thanks to everyone who attended, Calabash Tea & Tonic for providing the munchies and some refreshment, El Silencio Mezcal for providing the cocktails, and Red Bull for providing the additional flavor.

Kennedy Center (Terrace Theater) Site Visit

Did our walk thru of the newly renovated Terrace Theater, @KennedyCenter, and we got a chance to map out our staging and lighting design, which for us, is still pretty surreal, but we’re ready.

SHAOLIN JAZZ at Coney

We had a good time shooting this impromptu video two weeks ago at Coney Island.  The wind and traffic on the boardwalk were no joke, but it was worth it.
