SOUND PATTERNS / Bowie State University / Recap

The opening of our latest SOUND PATTERNS Art Exhibition, despite the rain, couldn’t have gone better and these exhibitions have a ton of moving parts.  Over ten artists, over thirty pieces of art (from 16″ to 3′, paintings, photography, graphic design), two TVs featuring video packages, one video projection, a makers station, numerous production visits, and two layout changes.

We’ve conducted quite a few SOUND PATTERNS exhibitions and with this one being our biggest, to date, it was extremely gratifying to see our vision com-to-life in addition to seeing people truly enjoy and experience that vision.  It was also gratifying to see that number of works on display and how different yet cohesive the works exist, as the theme of our exhibitions is to highlight art that’s consistent with the themes of Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Martial Arts – the DNA of SHAOLIN JAZZ.  Make no mistake, this is one of the best exhibitions featuring works consistent with those themes.

As apart of the opening reception we also conducted an interactive artist talk where we walked to each artist’s (those who were present) sections and had them discuss their inspirations, processes, as well as shared stories about their development as an artist and their works.

Thank you to Tewodross Melchishua, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of  Bowie State University’s Visual Communication and Digital Media Arts (VCDMA), for reaching out to us, Latasha Banks, the director of the Bowie State University Art Gallery and her team, everyone who attended, Maishah for holding down the makers station, and salute to all of the talented artists.

In case you missed the opening we certainly encourage people to check out the exhibition as it will be on display through March 17th and the gallery hours are: Mon. 10-6 pm, Tues. 10-5 pm, Wed. 9-7 pm, Thurs. 10-5 pm, Fri. 9-5 pm, and Sat. 12-6 pm.

Dan Wilkins / WHAT’S GOOD(?)

In our third edition of WHAT’S GOOD(?) we highlight Dan Wilkins: jazz artist, accomplished saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator.  His influences range from Dexter Gordon to Pujyashri Deepakbhai Desai.  Profile by Griffin Woodard.

If you were to see the titles Transfigured, Ebb and Flow, Of Distant Lands, Unraveled, and Soar, you might think you were about to read the treatises of a world explorer, Buddhist monk, or mystic poet. Although he may have certain qualities from each, Lehigh Valley, PA native Dan Wilkins is first and foremost a jazz artist; an accomplished saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator.  His influences range from Dexter Gordon to Pujyashri Deepakbhai Desai, for example.  Wilkins’ sound is like a breath of fresh, cold air which carries the distant majesty of ancient, candle-lit castles; his melodies speak like noble tales of warriors and pilgrims, ever on a journey.

Is Separate Ever Equal?

Glad I got a chance to check out the homie Munch Joseph’s (CEO of HedRush Agency) show “Is Separate Ever Equal?” at DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ space in their HQ.  In fact, it was too important of a show not to miss.  The concept was Joseph curating a show centered around the 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education. Five separate cases representing five jurisdictions across our nation were consolidated under one, each calling for gross societal inequities to be resolved.

Munch selected a range of contemporary artists who addressed these and other questions related to this topic. Visual art, public programming, thematic live performances and a series of lectures and demonstrations.  To check out some of the works click Read the rest of this entry
