Our second CAN I KICK IT? screening in NYC proved to be just as special as our first (the week prior) despite the unfortunate blackout that occurred in Midtown Manhattan, which eliminated power from nearby buildings, trains, even Times Square.
We’re fortunate and happy to provide our unique experience for those who made it and we’re hopeful that those who were en-route (as well as those who attended) made it home safely.
Despite the power-loss a good time was definitely had as we blessed the crowd with Tai Chi Master (starring Jet Li) – the surprise film for the New York Asian Film Festival’s “Secret Screening” event, which closed out the festival’s programming.
Thank you to the NYAFF for bringing us out and we appreciated all of your hospitality and thank you to everyone who attended and helped to spread the word. To check out the full recap click Read the rest of this entry

For our first date, Wed July 10th, we’ll be screening the ultimate O.G. New York (and hip-hop) classic The Warriors. And if you attended our sold-out screening of this film last year at The Kennedy Center then you already know how we completely changed how you understand this film and for this upcoming screening we promise that we will do the same times two!
We have a couple of surprises that will be announced later, but the film will start at 8:30 PM and these events are free/open to the public.

Fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture. Those are just four of many words that can be easily applied to and describe the first screening of this year’s DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? screening, featuring Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
Additionally, there was an overall feeling of community, with the number of families who have returned through the years, also with how, this year, attendees setup their chairs around DJ 2-Tone, signaling a closeness attendees have with CAN I KICK IT?
And if you’re familiar with SHAOLIN JAZZ and our CAN I KICK IT? engagement we work within a range of cultural spaces that have familial relationships with each other such as the synergies between hip-hop and comic books, martial arts and hip-hop and, by that math, comic books and martial arts.
And because we don’t have to “try” to create fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture people tend to enjoy and “feel” CAN I KICK IT? as an experience that taps into a certain part of one’s soul, both young and old.
Props to the DowntownDC BID for bringing us back for a third year, salute to all of our media partners for helping to promote this year’s series, shouts the cosplayers who attended, and thank you to everyone who attended and also helped to spread the word about us conducting CAN I KICK IT? at Freedom Plaza.

Calling all cosplayers! With us screening films exclusively from Marvel Studios’ catalog we of course wanted to invite cosplayers to participate and, on those nights, we’ll also be conducting a “Best Dressed” contest with the winner winning prizes from DowntownDC BID and SHAOLIN JAZZ.
See you there!
