CAN I KICK IT? / feat Enter the Dragon / Recap

Taking risks are apart of business, but when you build your brand a certain way and you plan and execute your marketing strategy properly those risks pay off and our final CAN I KICK IT? of 2017 exemplifies that risk, as we decided to conduct it the day after Christmas, despite a number of people responding after hearing the news, “You’re going to it when?” and “Are you sure, its the day after Christmas?”

The answers to those questions came in the form of us having our biggest crowd to date at Songbyrd, where standing-room-only quickly came into effect.  And the irony is that Songbyrd actually bought more chairs which was great because they did get used, however, the demand persisted.

Skeme Richards – What’s Good(?)

Hailing from Philadelphia, global DJ, cultural ambassador, and foodie (among many other hats), Skeme Richards has established himself as a connoisseur of cool for over 30 years.  Whether it was with his former imprint Hot Peas & Butta or his new venture Nostalgia King, Skeme is known globally as a tastemaker with roots in hip-hop, martial arts, and blaxploitation films.

As someone who’s been involved in the culture for so long, Skeme’s natural ability to connect people has allowed him to take advantage of the changing landscape that’s come with the spread of the internet and social media.  The self-proclaimed “pop culture preserver” says “I want to be the connector.  In the past, I feel like different scenes were so segregated.  I’m into 10 different things, so I want to connect people from those 10 different communities into one.”

With all of his ventures, his role as a DJ is still his bread and butter.  For example, he recently spun at the Marvel and Netflix collaboration, Marvel’s Luke Cage, an event that brought together the worlds of hip-hop and blaxploitation style television.  This is an extension of one of his most popular outlets, his all 45” vinyl parties originally known under Hot Peas & Butta.

SHAOLIN JAZZ (interview via Myk Blauuw) recently had a chance to talk to Skeme on his career and how he’s seen things change over the years, as well as his favorite burger (he recently started his hamburger reviews in a section, on his website Nostalgia King, called “The Drop – A Conversation Over Beef”) and the one record he’s still on the hunt for.

Big Trouble in Little China – Recap

June 2017 has been a milestone month for SHAOLIN JAZZ in that our CAN I KICK IT? engagement, which started as a simple idea developed during one of our college trips in MA, has grown into an event that’s rocked hundreds of people in our hometown, at one of the most iconic national monuments in our nation’s capital.  Simply put, we made something out of nothing, which is precisely how SHAOLIN JAZZ even started.  And we were able to add to the creative cultural fabric of our city and share it with friends and family which is uniquely special.

We more than appreciate the Downtown DC BID for wanting SHAOLIN JAZZ to conduct CAN I KICK IT? to help launch their Downtown Summer Flick series; we’d like to send an enormous bid of thanks to DC Music Download for their top tier PR support; thank you to our community and media partners: Lil SoSo Productions, 202creates, DC Funk Parade, Listen Local First DC, Zipcar, Boss Shepherd’s, Pret-A-Manger, the Mayor’s office on African American Affairs for their marketing and promotional support; props to everyone who’s helped to spread the word and shared their experience(s); and we cannot thank you enough to the individuals who’ve attended one, some, and, in some cases, all four screenings.

Keep in mind that we’ve still got more events and programming coming and this is just the first so stay tuned, and in the meantime for all SHAOLIN JAZZ info click here and to follow us on social media click: instagram, facebook, and twitter.

We, of course, have provided an event recap and to add to the experience we’ve added photos from attendees.  To check out the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
