“Hip-hop has a real focus on authenticity, but I hadn’t seen the authentic martial arts combined with hip-hop. As a martial artist coming into hip-hop, I really felt like I was embodying the mantra of rap is a martial art.” – Philippe Prosper
SHAOLIN JAZZ got a chance this week to chop it up with internationally decorated kung-fu artist and rapper, Philippe Prosper, aka Rap is A Martial Art.
If you enjoyed the opening reception for our CHAMBERS: Wu-Tang Art Exhibition, that we flipped with ART WHINO, then you’ll definitely want to check our closing reception (11.4), which will be something special for music lovers and true fans of Hip Hop.
The event, on Friday November 4th, will kick off with an Instant Vintage pop-up record fair and auction featuring some of the area’s finest vendors of Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Rock music on wax. Throughout that portion of the evening DJs from the DC Vinyl Headz collective will be spinning music from the each vendor that will be available for sale.
The second portion of the evening will be a Wu Tang Clan-themed producer showcase featuring some of the finest beatsmiths in the DC area. The evening’s festivities will be hosted by DJ 2-Tone Jones.

We’ve got tons going on with Byrd Over Staten dropping but we always like to keep our imprint on NYC so we’ll be doing a listening party in New York this Sunday Nov. 29th courtesy of the good people at the Reed Space (LES). Its 4-7pm and we’ll have some of our SHAOLIN JAZZ art on display as well as our SHAOLIN JAZZ multimedia video package. To RSVP click here.
The weather is finally starting to break and the turnout for our most recent CAN I KICK IT? certainly reflected that, along with a pretty expansive promotion and marketing effort. There’s not too much that beats a 70 degree Spring evening in DC and “The New Legend of Shaolin” had attendees locked from the opening scene and Jet Lei’s kid co-star, 9 year-old Xie Mao (Tze Miu), provided a surprising boost with dynamic martial arts skills that rivaled his adult co-stars.
Props to everyone that attended; salute to Marvin for hosting, special shouts to our amazing bartender Alyssa, Madison Davenport PR, Som Records, and Palace 5ive , DSE Live – our media partners, and thanks to TC, Cherisse, and Duane for the promotional lift. Thanks also to Lyft – our transportation sponsor.
Stay tuned for our next CAN I KICK IT? which will be Tuesday May 26th. For more recap pics click Read the rest of this entry
