SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Shamona Stokes

What’s your name and where are you from?
Shamona Stokes. I’m originally from Jersey but have spent the last 13 years in New York (Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan)

Who or what got you interested in design?
As an illustration major at Pratt, I didn’t have a real interest in graphic design or making art on the computer. I was more drawn to working with my hands: drawing, painting, and collage. But after graduation, I took a few design classes and developed a real love of typography. After paying my dues and a lot of late nights, I landed a great job as an art director at a small design studio where I had the creative freedom to learn as much as possible.  Click here to order Shamona’s SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Chris L

What’s your name and where are you from?

Please call me Chris L, I’m from Toronto-Canada and I’m currently based out of the worlds most densely populated city-Hong Kong.

Who or what got you interested in design?

Born a Libra, I feel I have some sort of natural attraction to well designed things.  Design has been a big part of my life since my teens. From what I remember it started from collecting comics, hip hop records, magazines and all sorts of party flyers. There was this one xl sized rave flyer with a chrome 3D skull, neon tech fonts and a million DJs listed with another million sponsors all neatly placed and aligned.  I thought that was the shit. But things changed when I bought GZAs liquid swords, the artwork by Denys Cowan/DC comics made me see design differently. It mended my love for drawing, design, and Hip Hop all together.  Click here to order Chris’ SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Vassilina Pljonkina

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Vassilina Pljonkina and I’m from Tallinn, Estonia.

Who or what got you interested in design?

Graphic design itself and on the whole is my basic interest – it’s my work and my hobby.

What kinds of projects do you most enjoy?

I like to take a part in contests for designers, especially poster contests. I enjoy these projects, because of minimum requirements and wide opportunities to realize and show my ideas.  Click here to order Vassilina’s SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Matthew Stuckey

What’s your name and where are you from?

Matthew Stuckey – Adelaide Australia

Who or what got you interested in design?

When I was really young I used to copy Garfield comics so I was influenced a lot by the neatness of Jim Davis’ illustrations. As a teenager I used to teach myself how to draw Major League, NBA and NFL logos, so I was always interested in combining custom type and characters to form really tight compositions.

How has your upbringing and or environment inspired you or shaped your design process?

I guess if you’re creative visually, you absorb a lot from your environment; colours, signs, typography, shapes of buildings. As far as my upbringing, I was always encouraged to try new things and find what I was good at, so they helped obviously.  Click here to order Matthew’s SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Terrence Knoles

What’s your name and where are you from?

Terrence Knoles. San Francisco, California.

Who or what got you interested in design?

Skateboarding. I grew up in the 90s and skateboarding was at the center of my world. Besides actually pushing the board around, skateboarding served as my mechanism for discovering new music, finding artists and learning about print and logo design. Without it, I may not have ever discovered graphic design.  Click here to order Terrence’s SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry

SHAOLIN JAZZ – T-shirts / Graphic Designer Interviews: Jean Mosambi

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Jean Mosambi and I’m from France.

Who or what got you interested in design?

A friend of mine, who is a gifted graphic painter: Rock.

(check his work here: www.rocky-rock.com). Thanks to him, I do what I do now.

How has your upbringing and or environment inspired you or shaped your design process?

I have always been interested in images – as a child, I used to read lots of comics. Then I started skating. Though I was better at shooting skaters than skating myself. So I went deeply into photography.  At that time skating and hip-hop were connected, I’ve discovered the graffiti scene and so on. Actually many things are linked and as I’m curious I always try to go deeper.  Click here to order Jean’s SHAOLIN JAZZ graphic tee.  To read more click>>> Read the rest of this entry
