Despite the rain, this edition of CAN I KICK IT? was one of our biggest, yet. We actually had to post-pone last month’s installment to due to severe heat and then the storming that followed. And since we received a great deal of interest regarding the movie (Big Trouble in Little China), in addition to 2-Tone and I being fans as well, we decided to screen it for our July event.
Props to everyone that attended, the staff at Marvin for holding us down, Alexis, TC, and Cherisse for our PR/marketing support, and huge salute to Sherry, Frankie and their Soul and Ink team for conducting their live screen printing experience. Stay tuned, as we’ll definitely have them back for other screenings.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the end of Aug for our next screening and for more recap pics Read the rest of this entry
Earlier this year I talked to 2-Tone about the idea of doing a SHAOLIN JAZZ event series in DC, as all of our lectures, events, etc. take place outside of the DMV (which is where we’re based), and the idea of screening Kung-Fu films and playing classic hip-hop came to mind. Its a simple concept akin to all lovers of hip-hop and Kung-Fu flics (there’s always been this very organic connection between the two) – those week or weekend nights where everyone gathers at one friend’s crib to eat, watch, drink, listen, freestyle (not all in that order) and the idea of doing CAN I KICK IT? was birthed.
Join us for the launch of CAN I KICK IT? – a unique, monthly event series catered to lovers of Martial Arts flicks, the music inspired by the films, and everything else in between. Starting Thursday June 26th (and taking place the 4th Tuesday of every month) @ Marvin, 6pm-9pm, CAN I KICK IT? will consist of two films being screened throughout the venue with attendees also enjoying a soundtrack of Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul and cinema soundbites mixed live by DJ 2-Tone Jones. SHAOLIN JAZZ artwork and additional visuals on display as well.
