New York is one of the cities that we’ve been to raring to rock and, despite some technical difficulties, we more than made sure to make our impression felt with our CAN I KICK IT? version of the ultimate NYC cinematic classic The Warriors.
We sincerely appreciate the over 500 people in attendance who stuck with us, props to the tech-savvy security guard who came in in the ninth hour with a solution, salute to our team who helped behind-the-scenes, and thank you to Hudson River Park for bringing us out to open their Hudson RiverFlicks outdoor series.
We look forward to coming back August 14th with Berry Gordy’s classic The Last Dragon, so be sure to plan ahead, and for the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
For Thor, the weather was what we wanted, which led to creating the vibe started by DJ 2-Tone and picked up by DJ G-Rock.
The music for the evening’s movie, of course inspired by the film, ranged from avante-garde hip hop to classic rock, helping to revisit and enhance the story’s narrative, punchlines, and visual effects.
Thanks to the DowntownDC BID, Terence Nicholson and G-Rock for elevating the vibe, the many who came, those who spread the word, and our media partners.

We’re pleased to announce that we’re finally bringing CAN I KICK IT? to NYC and we’ll be conducting it three times through the course of the summer and for our first trip we’re excited to be conducting it as apart of an organization called Hudson River Park for two dates of their popular outdoor series: Hudson RiverFlicks.
For our first date, Wed July 10th, we’ll be screening the ultimate O.G. New York (and hip-hop) classic The Warriors. And if you attended our sold-out screening of this film last year at The Kennedy Center then you already know how we completely changed how you understand this film and for this upcoming screening we promise that we will do the same times two!
We have a couple of surprises that will be announced later, but the film will start at 8:30 PM and these events are free/open to the public.

Join us this Tues June 11th for the block buster hit: Black Panther – the second film of our DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? series. This film earned a myriad of records such as the second highest grossing film of 2018, the third highest grossing film ever in the US, and the ninth highest grossing film of all time.
We start the evening’s activities at 7:30 PM with a DJ set by NYC’s finest and friend of SHAOLIN JAZZ P.U.D.G.E, with the film starting promptly at 8:30 PM.
This will also be our second night inviting cosplayers as well as conducting a ‘best dressed’ contest, so be sure to rep your favorite superhero!

Fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture. Those are just four of many words that can be easily applied to and describe the first screening of this year’s DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? screening, featuring Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
Additionally, there was an overall feeling of community, with the number of families who have returned through the years, also with how, this year, attendees setup their chairs around DJ 2-Tone, signaling a closeness attendees have with CAN I KICK IT?
And if you’re familiar with SHAOLIN JAZZ and our CAN I KICK IT? engagement we work within a range of cultural spaces that have familial relationships with each other such as the synergies between hip-hop and comic books, martial arts and hip-hop and, by that math, comic books and martial arts.
And because we don’t have to “try” to create fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture people tend to enjoy and “feel” CAN I KICK IT? as an experience that taps into a certain part of one’s soul, both young and old.
Props to the DowntownDC BID for bringing us back for a third year, salute to all of our media partners for helping to promote this year’s series, shouts the cosplayers who attended, and thank you to everyone who attended and also helped to spread the word about us conducting CAN I KICK IT? at Freedom Plaza.
