“Hip-hop has a real focus on authenticity, but I hadn’t seen the authentic martial arts combined with hip-hop. As a martial artist coming into hip-hop, I really felt like I was embodying the mantra of rap is a martial art.” – Philippe Prosper
SHAOLIN JAZZ got a chance this week to chop it up with internationally decorated kung-fu artist and rapper, Philippe Prosper, aka Rap is A Martial Art.
Glad so many of you got a chance to experience CAN I KICK IT? on Tues. And although each film is different, I’ve been getting an almost familial feeling as these events have progressed. Beyond this being a SHAOLIN JAZZ experience, we like to think of these as cultural experiences for people to enjoy. To view the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
This guy’s style was unmatched and this movie ranks among one of the most iconic films. We’re happy to announce this month’s featured presentation will be Black Belt Jones starring the iconic Jim Kelly. For more info/RSVP click here.

Despite the rain, this edition of CAN I KICK IT? was one of our biggest, yet. We actually had to post-pone last month’s installment to due to severe heat and then the storming that followed. And since we received a great deal of interest regarding the movie (Big Trouble in Little China), in addition to 2-Tone and I being fans as well, we decided to screen it for our July event.
Props to everyone that attended, the staff at Marvin for holding us down, Alexis, TC, and Cherisse for our PR/marketing support, and huge salute to Sherry, Frankie and their Soul and Ink team for conducting their live screen printing experience. Stay tuned, as we’ll definitely have them back for other screenings.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the end of Aug for our next screening and for more recap pics Read the rest of this entry
