Its almost fitting that we ended our CAN I KICK IT? x Downtown Summer Flicks outdoor movie screening series with Avengers Infinity War, given the film’s huge success and its significance to the story in that line Marvel Studios’ movies. And despite this being our rain-date, a good time was had all-the-same.
We of course would like to thank the DowntownDC BID for once again bringing us back for a third year, thank you to all of our sponsors and media partners, props to all of the guest DJs, martial artists who conducted demos, and the cosplayers, salute to everyone who helped on-site and spread the word, and a huge thank you to everyone who attended – some who attended multiple screenings.
Our summer is far from over, with our next screening happening at The Cary Theater (Cary, NC.) featuring KILL BILL Vol. 1, on Aug. 2nd. For tickets and additional info click here.

Our CAN I KICK IT? screening of Captain Marvel shaped up to be the highest attended film in the history of the DowntownDC Summer Flicks series. The evening also included vibe-setting opening DJ sets by DJ Miss H.E.R and Cleveland Browne, an activation by JUMP Bikes – who brought their signature bikes and scooters for people to demo, and a hugely dynamic martial arts demonstration from our friend Philippe Prosper and his brother James Whitley, who performed using weapons and hand-to-hand styles.
We hope to see you next Tues, July 16th, for Avengers Infinity War, which is the final movie in our series, and for the full recap from Tues click Read the rest of this entry
For Thor, the weather was what we wanted, which led to creating the vibe started by DJ 2-Tone and picked up by DJ G-Rock.
The music for the evening’s movie, of course inspired by the film, ranged from avante-garde hip hop to classic rock, helping to revisit and enhance the story’s narrative, punchlines, and visual effects.
Thanks to the DowntownDC BID, Terence Nicholson and G-Rock for elevating the vibe, the many who came, those who spread the word, and our media partners.

We’re pretty excited for next week’s event, as we’ll also have opening DJ sets by DJ Lickashot and G-Rock, starting at 7:30 PM, as well as a live martial arts demo by DC’s own, and friend of SHAOLIN JAZZ, Terence Nicholson, which start around 8 PM.

One of our goals with our first screening, last Tues, was to set a tone and a vibe for this year’s series and certainly give anyone new to CAN I KICK IT? an understanding of how we watch, which is different from the norm. We, essentially, want to give people a wholly new movie-going experience and we hope that its an experience that they feel is theirs, regardless if they’ve seen the movie or not, but to also enjoy sharing that experience with others via social media or inviting/bringing friends and family.
We hope we’re able to establish all of the above with our screening of Black Panther.
Thank you to our partner DowntownDC BID, all of our sponsors and media partners, and thank you, most importantly, to everyone who’s been attending and spreading the word. This is an experience for everyone.
We hope to see everyone next Tues June 18th for Deadpool. Please keep in mind this is an “R” rated film that contains strong language and content and is suggested for mature audiences only.

Join us this Tues June 11th for the block buster hit: Black Panther – the second film of our DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? series. This film earned a myriad of records such as the second highest grossing film of 2018, the third highest grossing film ever in the US, and the ninth highest grossing film of all time.
We start the evening’s activities at 7:30 PM with a DJ set by NYC’s finest and friend of SHAOLIN JAZZ P.U.D.G.E, with the film starting promptly at 8:30 PM.
This will also be our second night inviting cosplayers as well as conducting a ‘best dressed’ contest, so be sure to rep your favorite superhero!

Fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture. Those are just four of many words that can be easily applied to and describe the first screening of this year’s DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? screening, featuring Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
Additionally, there was an overall feeling of community, with the number of families who have returned through the years, also with how, this year, attendees setup their chairs around DJ 2-Tone, signaling a closeness attendees have with CAN I KICK IT?
And if you’re familiar with SHAOLIN JAZZ and our CAN I KICK IT? engagement we work within a range of cultural spaces that have familial relationships with each other such as the synergies between hip-hop and comic books, martial arts and hip-hop and, by that math, comic books and martial arts.
And because we don’t have to “try” to create fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture people tend to enjoy and “feel” CAN I KICK IT? as an experience that taps into a certain part of one’s soul, both young and old.
Props to the DowntownDC BID for bringing us back for a third year, salute to all of our media partners for helping to promote this year’s series, shouts the cosplayers who attended, and thank you to everyone who attended and also helped to spread the word about us conducting CAN I KICK IT? at Freedom Plaza.

Calling all cosplayers! With us screening films exclusively from Marvel Studios’ catalog we of course wanted to invite cosplayers to participate and, on those nights, we’ll also be conducting a “Best Dressed” contest with the winner winning prizes from DowntownDC BID and SHAOLIN JAZZ.
See you there!
