CAN I KICK IT? / “The New Legend of Shaolin” / Recap

The weather is finally starting to break and the turnout for our most recent CAN I KICK IT? certainly reflected that, along with a pretty expansive promotion and marketing effort.  There’s not too much that beats a 70 degree Spring evening in DC and “The New Legend of Shaolin” had attendees locked from the opening scene and Jet Lei’s kid co-star, 9 year-old Xie Mao (Tze Miu), provided a surprising boost with dynamic martial arts skills that rivaled his adult co-stars.

Props to everyone that attended; salute to Marvin for hosting, special shouts to our amazing bartender Alyssa, Madison Davenport PR, Som Records, and Palace 5ive , DSE Live – our media partners, and thanks to TC, Cherisse, and Duane for the promotional lift.  Thanks also to Lyft – our transportation sponsor.

CAN I KICK IT? – Kung Fu Flics + Classic Hip-Hop

promo5

Earlier this year I talked to 2-Tone about the idea of doing a SHAOLIN JAZZ event series in DC, as all of our lectures, events, etc. take place outside of the DMV (which is where we’re based), and the idea of screening Kung-Fu films and playing classic hip-hop came to mind.  Its a simple concept akin to all lovers of hip-hop and Kung-Fu flics (there’s always been this very organic connection between the two) – those week or weekend nights where everyone gathers at one friend’s crib to eat, watch, drink, listen, freestyle (not all in that order) and the idea of doing CAN I KICK IT? was birthed.

Join us for the launch of CAN I KICK IT? – a unique, monthly event series catered to lovers of Martial Arts flicks, the music inspired by the films, and everything else in between.  Starting Thursday June 26th (and taking place the 4th Tuesday of every month) @ Marvin, 6pm-9pm, CAN I KICK IT? will consist of two films being screened throughout the venue with attendees also enjoying a soundtrack of Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul and cinema soundbites mixed live by DJ 2-Tone JonesSHAOLIN JAZZ artwork and additional visuals on display as well.
