Last week I was fortunate to get the shout about the screening of Spotify’s first documentary I’m with the banned.
Really liked how they flipped the editing to give it almost like a cinematic music video-feel.
Essentially I’m with the banned is a music initiative to empower artists and fans from different cultures to come together, and to amplify the voices of people and communities that have been silenced. The documentary focuses on a variety of issues that impact different communities today–from immigration to LGBTQ equality–through artist collaborations, performances and original content.
I’m with the banned chronicles a musical collaboration between six artists from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Iran; the countries incorporated in the proposed travel ban, with six American artists such as Pusha T, Dr. Lonnie Smith, BJ The Chicago Kid, and K.Flay. And since the artists from the Middle East cannot enter the U.S. they and the American have to record in Toronto.
In addition the complimentary drinks and popcorn at E Street Cinema, where the screening was held in DC, the good people at Spotify saw that it was also only fit to do an after-party (open bar) at a spot downtown featuring artists from the documentary Moh Flow and DC’s own Oddisee.
I’m with the banned will air, in it’s entirety, on VICE this month so stay tuned and for the additional info about the doc click here and to check out the full event recap click Read the rest of this entry
For this to be our first ‘fan pick’ edition of CAN I KICK IT? we were pleasantly surprised. When you do something new, you have no idea what’s going to happen, but then you have moments like this where people participated with lots of and in some cases – very random suggestions of movie titles and then there’s the surprise announcement of the film that night, which, as we hoped would happen, proved to be the icing on the cake.
In the end, Road House, a classic title from the late 80’s starring Patrick Swayze (RIP), won the night. Props to Songbyrd for hosting and thanks again to everyone who came thru as well as all of those who spread the word. Lastly, special shout to Maishah for also run our pop-up shop. Our return to Songbyrd after our month long CAN I KICK IT? series at Freedom Plaza, had some minor hurdles (arrive early for seating), but was a good time. We’re now downstairs, for the next few months, and Songbyrd’s performance space is a great fit allowing for people to chill out and enjoy the movie.
Thanks to everyone who attended, Sonbyrd for hosting, props to Efua’s Baby (pop-up shop), and salute to everyone who helped spread the word.
And if you missed this month be sure to check us out next month Aug. 22nd for Shaolin vs Ninja.
