Black President’s Day 2017 – Recap

Props to the homie Kat for adding to her legacy of dropping the illest Fela Kuti celebrations to date, Black President’s Day.  If you’ve never been to a Lil SoSo event (Kat’s experience and event design agency) then you’re missing out on some of the most engaging and original events and creative salons, globally, and if you’ve never been to her Black President’s Day events then re-read what I just wrote.

The crowds and energy are amazing, and add to that world renown DJs, live musicians, the highly anticipated Queens Stroll, and video montages of Fela’s performances and speeches, and you’ve got yourself a memorable time.  It sounds simple, right, but you’ve also got to have the mix of everything on top of experience or it simply won’t work.

DOCUMENT the Fresh / Interviews: Vickey Ford/Sneakshot

Dangelo_FHNYC15-2583Who or what first got you interested in photography?

Music, Fashion & my Mom.  Music has always played a big part of my life.  My mother would attend concerts and shared her photos & stories.  My mother took me to see New Edition, the music & the lights …just the whole vibe and emotions that I felt instilled a love of music in me. And I wanted to capture that.  Then the hip-hop scene further intensified my love for photography.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

The usual stuff; family, rocks, my feet but that’s when I was a little girl.  When I picked up the camera again as an adult it was my love for live concerts, wanting to capture that moment.  For the entire read click Read the rest of this entry

DOCUMENT the Fresh / Interviews: Ashley Sky Walker

pic2Who or what first got you interested in photography?

I was first introduced to the art of photography while at Howard university.  While there I was surrounded with friends also interested in the arts. After discussing our dreams and aspirations to do what we saw in the magazines, we decided to start doing our own photo shoots.  From that point on I was hooked on the idea of capturing the beautiful things around me with my camera.

DOCUMENT the Fresh / Interviews: Brody Rose

IMG_4549Who or what first got you interested in photography?

As a kid I was in infatuated by roller coasters (still am). I read about them, drew them, watched them, and rode them. Around the 4th grade I started to take pictures of them. My parents would let me borrow the camera, which was a big deal. Getting back a roll of 36 from the developer was super exciting. Doubles were a must: one set for the scrapbook and one for collages. Looking back, roller coasters were a fantastic subject matter for an aspiring photographer. They’re like huge sculptures really. Without realizing it, they made me think about perspective, motion, depth of field, and of course composition. Sneaking my camera on the ride for point of view shots was thrilling ——–

DOCUMENT the Fresh / T-Shirts

One of the photographers (and dope graphic designer) of this year’s NYC DOCUMENT the Fresh exhibition (Brody Rose) suggested I drop two of the NYC identities as T-Shirts, which seemed like a dope idea.  I already had some basic Doc Fresh T-Shirts but these designs give the range some life.  I’ve posted some of the designs below (link below) and to check out the full range click here Read the rest of this entry
