Our final CAN I KICK IT?, of the Hudson River Parks’ Hudson RiverFlicks outdoor screening series, couldn’t have been more hip-hop (from its early beginnings), an exercise in resourcefulness, or DIY.
The passing weather made it impossible for us to conduct the screening at the designated location, so the team at Hudson River Parks had a plan B: take an empty hanger/warehouse space that they never activate that had only 1 working light, bring in a generator for power, use one of the exposed bring walls for a screen, open up the garage doors, and bring chairs and the A/V equipment. The result was a uniquely memorable experience that was intensified by a raw space in New York. Classic.
The only downside were the people who could not make it due to our quick location change as well as those who were unfortunately turned away, as we reached our 200 max capacity very early.
We’ve had an incredibly fun run with the two CAN I KICK IT? screenings that we were fortunate to conduct as apart of Hudson River Parks’ series and we’re hopeful to come back next year.
Thanks again to Hudson River Parks for bringing us, props to everyone who helped, salute to everyone who spread the word, and thank you to everyone who attended.

We’re pleased to announce that this Wed. Aug. 7th we’re finally bringing CAN I KICK IT? to international waters and will be conducting a special edition of it in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) as apart of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association’s Summer Movie Nights programming.
The featured film will be the live action 2014 version of the 90’s cartoon classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with the screening taking place at the Van Art Gallery North Plaza.
DJ 2-Tone will set the vibe at 7 PM, followed up by Bboy workshops and exhibitions by Shape Shifter Studio, and a martial arts demo by Lion MMA around 8:30 PM. The movie will start around 8:40 PM.

For next CAN I KICK IT? at Songbyrd, on Tues Aug 27th, we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be screening the blaxploitation classic Cleopatra Jones.
If you’re unfamiliar with the title, Cleopatra Jones is an undercover special agent for the United States Government. Overseas modeling is only a cover for her real job. Cleo is a Bond-like heroine with power and influence, her silver and black `73 Corvette Stingray (equipped with automatic weapons), and her martial arts ability. While she evokes the glory of a funk goddess, she remains loyal to her drug-ravaged community and her lover, Reuben Masters (Bernie Casey), who runs B&S House (a community home for recovering drug addicts).
DJ 2-Tone Jones sets the vibe with music starting around 6:30 with the movie starting around 7:30 PM. Drink and food specials will be available.
CAN I KICK IT? is free and open to the public.
We hope to see you there!
Its almost fitting that we ended our CAN I KICK IT? x Downtown Summer Flicks outdoor movie screening series with Avengers Infinity War, given the film’s huge success and its significance to the story in that line Marvel Studios’ movies. And despite this being our rain-date, a good time was had all-the-same.
We of course would like to thank the DowntownDC BID for once again bringing us back for a third year, thank you to all of our sponsors and media partners, props to all of the guest DJs, martial artists who conducted demos, and the cosplayers, salute to everyone who helped on-site and spread the word, and a huge thank you to everyone who attended – some who attended multiple screenings.
Our summer is far from over, with our next screening happening at The Cary Theater (Cary, NC.) featuring KILL BILL Vol. 1, on Aug. 2nd. For tickets and additional info click here.
Our second CAN I KICK IT? screening in NYC proved to be just as special as our first (the week prior) despite the unfortunate blackout that occurred in Midtown Manhattan, which eliminated power from nearby buildings, trains, even Times Square.
We’re fortunate and happy to provide our unique experience for those who made it and we’re hopeful that those who were en-route (as well as those who attended) made it home safely.
Despite the power-loss a good time was definitely had as we blessed the crowd with Tai Chi Master (starring Jet Li) – the surprise film for the New York Asian Film Festival’s “Secret Screening” event, which closed out the festival’s programming.
Thank you to the NYAFF for bringing us out and we appreciated all of your hospitality and thank you to everyone who attended and helped to spread the word. To check out the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
