We’re pleased to announce that, after last month’s successful outdoor series at Freedom Plaza, we’re back at Songbyrd Music House & Record Cafe for our next edition of CAN I KICK IT?, Tues July 25th, screening the cult classic Marked for Death starring Steven Seagal, 6 – 10 PM, FREE.
We’re pretty excited about this month’s screening, as we’ll be conducting CAN I KICK IT? downstairs in Songbyrd’s music house, so please take note.
At this month’s event we’re happy to announce that the pop-up shop (also located downstairs) will feature Efua’s baby – a Washington, DC woman owned business offering high quality handmade products including 100% all natual soy & coconut oil candles, body butters and other products.

June 2017 has been a milestone month for SHAOLIN JAZZ in that our CAN I KICK IT? engagement, which started as a simple idea developed during one of our college trips in MA, has grown into an event that’s rocked hundreds of people in our hometown, at one of the most iconic national monuments in our nation’s capital. Simply put, we made something out of nothing, which is precisely how SHAOLIN JAZZ even started. And we were able to add to the creative cultural fabric of our city and share it with friends and family which is uniquely special.
We more than appreciate the Downtown DC BID for wanting SHAOLIN JAZZ to conduct CAN I KICK IT? to help launch their Downtown Summer Flick series; we’d like to send an enormous bid of thanks to DC Music Download for their top tier PR support; thank you to our community and media partners: Lil SoSo Productions, 202creates, DC Funk Parade, Listen Local First DC, Zipcar, Boss Shepherd’s, Pret-A-Manger, the Mayor’s office on African American Affairs for their marketing and promotional support; props to everyone who’s helped to spread the word and shared their experience(s); and we cannot thank you enough to the individuals who’ve attended one, some, and, in some cases, all four screenings.
Keep in mind that we’ve still got more events and programming coming and this is just the first so stay tuned, and in the meantime for all SHAOLIN JAZZ info click here and to follow us on social media click: instagram, facebook, and twitter.
We, of course, have provided an event recap and to add to the experience we’ve added photos from attendees. To check out the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
“Hip-hop has a real focus on authenticity, but I hadn’t seen the authentic martial arts combined with hip-hop. As a martial artist coming into hip-hop, I really felt like I was embodying the mantra of rap is a martial art.” – Philippe Prosper
SHAOLIN JAZZ got a chance this week to chop it up with internationally decorated kung-fu artist and rapper, Philippe Prosper, aka Rap is A Martial Art.
DJ 2-Tone Jones and I would like to sincerely thank all of those who attended yesterday kicking off the inaugural DC Summer Flicks series via our CAN I KICK IT? engagement. I’m biased, of course, but its fresh to see something different happening in the city. For the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
Check out our “CAN I KICK IT? – City” design which is inspired by our CAN I KICK IT? engagement where we fuse classic martial arts flicks with a live hip hop score mixed by SHAOLIN JAZZ co-founder DJ 2-Tone Jones. Customize and shop here.
Our “The 37th Chamber Mixtape” design is a graphic inspired by our first SHAOLIN JAZZ music release from 2011. The irony is that we called it a mixtape (and still do because we’re from that era) despite it only being available via MP3 and CD and not as an actual cassette.
