Barry Bishop The Creative – Interview

Barry Bishop is a legendary artist from Washington, DC who’s early works in DC’s streetwear scene (’87) made him a major influence – having created a number of the foundational designs that set the tone and direction for DC’s famed Madness Connection, which inspired him to start his own groundbreaking line B-Man Apparel.

Bishop is also an esteemed portrait artist, via his signature style of black and white, and his new show, Barry Bishop The Creative – Original Paintings and Prints, will open on Saturday December 7th, at the Brookland Artspace Lofts.

I got a chance to talk to Barry to learn more about his past and how its influencing his present and future.

CAN I KICK IT? / Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse / Recap

Fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture.  Those are just four of many words that can be easily applied to and describe the first screening of this year’s DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? screening, featuring Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.

Additionally, there was an overall feeling of community, with the number of families who have returned through the years, also with how, this year, attendees setup their chairs around DJ 2-Tone, signaling a closeness attendees have with CAN I KICK IT?

And if you’re familiar with SHAOLIN JAZZ and our CAN I KICK IT? engagement we work within a range of cultural spaces that have familial relationships with each other such as the synergies between hip-hop and comic books, martial arts and hip-hop and, by that math, comic books and martial arts.

And because we don’t have to “try” to create fun, engagement, entertainment, and culture people tend to enjoy and “feel” CAN I KICK IT? as an experience that taps into a certain part of one’s soul, both young and old.

Props to the DowntownDC BID for bringing us back for a third year, salute to all of our media partners for helping to promote this year’s series, shouts the cosplayers who attended, and thank you to everyone who attended and also helped to spread the word about us conducting CAN I KICK IT? at Freedom Plaza.
