We have a number of firsts this week and to add to that list we’d like to announce the launch of WHAT’S GOOD(?) – an editorial series where we interview and profile select influencers, innovators, and cultural purveyors who’s tastes and work are akin to ours.
And with our first edition of WHAT’S GOOD(?), which drops Monday November 13th, we talk to Skeme Richards: world renowned DJ, rare collectibles connoisseur, and martial arts films aficionado (to name a few hats). Stay tuned for the drop.
Introducing our latest multimedia engagement: SHAOLIN JAZZ A/V (AUDIOVISUAL) – an audio/video journey through the worlds of hip-hop, jazz, and martial arts. DJ 2-Tone combines the art of DJing with video-mixing in an innovative multimedia experience that explores the music that has inspired the SHAOLIN JAZZ catalog in sync with moving visuals, select music videos, and clips from iconic martial arts films and vintage flicks. We’re pleased to announce our newest SHAOLIN JAZZ design: “Influences.” “Influences” is a series that takes stylistic cues from pop art and graffiti and fuses them with SHAOLIN JAZZ’s more specific cultural influences of hip-hop, jazz, and martial arts. Our goal with each design, starting with “Influences 1.0,” is to tell a story that pays homage to our creative make-up, provide, if you look closely, a visual history lesson, and give insight into SHAOLIN JAZZ’s cultural DNA. It was a lot of work from start to finish (we drove up to NYC immediately following CAN I KICK IT? Tues. night), but I must say that our first BizBash trade show (on Wed.) yielded success for us in a variety of ways. If you’re unfamiliar with BizBash they’re one of America’s top sources for news, ideas and resources for event and meeting professionals, via their websites, web tools, and exhibitions.
BizBash NYC, which took place at the Jacob Javitz Center, gave us an opportunity to meet and network with a range of event specialists from brands and institutions such as Westin Hotels, NYU, and Viacom, where we, for six hours straight, got a chance to speak to them about our SHAOLIN JAZZ multimedia engagements.
We, for the most part, have conducted the majority of our engagements at colleges and universities and us exhibiting at BizBash is our first big push at developing business in the corporate space.
Despite only getting three hours of sleep and dealing with the grind of NYC morning and evening commuter traffic the show was more than worth it (we’ll be back) and to check out the recap click Read the rest of this entry
Props to the homie Kat for adding to her legacy of dropping the illest Fela Kuti celebrations to date, Black President’s Day. If you’ve never been to a Lil SoSo event (Kat’s experience and event design agency) then you’re missing out on some of the most engaging and original events and creative salons, globally, and if you’ve never been to her Black President’s Day events then re-read what I just wrote.
The crowds and energy are amazing, and add to that world renown DJs, live musicians, the highly anticipated Queens Stroll, and video montages of Fela’s performances and speeches, and you’ve got yourself a memorable time. It sounds simple, right, but you’ve also got to have the mix of everything on top of experience or it simply won’t work.
For this to be our first ‘fan pick’ edition of CAN I KICK IT? we were pleasantly surprised. When you do something new, you have no idea what’s going to happen, but then you have moments like this where people participated with lots of and in some cases – very random suggestions of movie titles and then there’s the surprise announcement of the film that night, which, as we hoped would happen, proved to be the icing on the cake.
In the end, Road House, a classic title from the late 80’s starring Patrick Swayze (RIP), won the night. Props to Songbyrd for hosting and thanks again to everyone who came thru as well as all of those who spread the word. Lastly, special shout to Maishah for also run our pop-up shop.
