For our last CAN I KICK IT? of 2018 and to follow up our sold out Kennedy Center event, we had to bring the heat and what better way to do so than with The Big Boss starring the incomparable Bruce Lee, which was his first US movie.
We’ve got some great surprises lined up for our 2019 season including an amazing lineup of cult and contemporary classic martial arts films. Thanks to everyone who’s attended any of our CAN I KICK IT? events, including our Kennedy Center show, shouts to everyone who’s helped and spread the word, and props to Songbyrd for hosting. Your platform is much appreciated.

Our CAN I KICK IT? event at The Kennedy Center is, hands down, one of our biggest events to date. The outdoors series at Freedom Plaza that we’ve done with the Downtown DC BID also shares that space. And as cliche as it sounds, its hard to put into words the feeling that we got and how amazing the experience was the day of when 2-Tone dropped the needle and the movie started.
Let me be clear, there was an enormous amount of work that went into every component of the production: the design of the promo materials and the actual promotion of them/the event, the stage design and the careful selection and placement of all of the items, the countless hours (even months) 2-Tone spent curating just the right music for just the right scene. There was a lot to consider and it all led to a remarkable experience that no one, who attended, will ever forget and it also led to us selling out The Kennedy Center’s 450+ seat Terrace Theater.
This experience has been an eye-opener on so many levels including understanding that part of what we’re doing furthers the culture that we love: Hip-Hop. And to think – SHAOLIN JAZZ started in 2011 as an idea for just a mixtape and has grown into something that has graced the halls of a venue as prestigious as The Kennedy Center. But don’t get it twisted, there’s so much more work to be done.
Thank you to Simone Eccleston for giving us a shot and props to her production team for all of their efforts. Thanks to Maishah and Ja’Mon for going above and beyond with our merch table and for providing a warm welcome to all of our attendees. Props to RBI and Roddy (and Choppy), along with 2-Tone, for blessing the show with that dope DJ frenzy. Salute to the radio shows who let 2-Tone and I on and to everyone who helped to spread the word, left a positive comment, etc…regardless if you did or didn’t attend. And of course thank you to everyone who attended (including friends and family) and helped sell-out the show. Your support is more than appreciated.

Our CAN I KICK IT? screening at the Freer/Sackler Gallery’s (The Smithsonian) Made in Hong Kong Film Festival was, from start to finish, nothing short of a good time. 2-Tone not only rocked the opening reception (which included live Martial Arts demonstrations, curated food and cocktails) but, immediately after the reception he proceeded downstairs to setup for and rock our screening, to a maximum capacity crowd, of the Shaw Bros’ 80’s classic Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu.
This event represented a couple of firsts for us, in that not only was this our first time conducting CAN I KICK IT? in a film festival, but that this was our first time (and hopefully not our last) rocking for a standing room only crowd.
Thanks to Tom and his team at the Freer/Sackler for once again bringing us back for another event, props to everyone who helped spread the word, special shouts to Ja’Mon for helping to hold down the merch table as well as shooting, and thanks to everyone who attended. Your support is very much appreciated.
