June 2017 has been a milestone month for SHAOLIN JAZZ in that our CAN I KICK IT? engagement, which started as a simple idea developed during one of our college trips in MA, has grown into an event that’s rocked hundreds of people in our hometown, at one of the most iconic national monuments in our nation’s capital. Simply put, we made something out of nothing, which is precisely how SHAOLIN JAZZ even started. And we were able to add to the creative cultural fabric of our city and share it with friends and family which is uniquely special.
We more than appreciate the Downtown DC BID for wanting SHAOLIN JAZZ to conduct CAN I KICK IT? to help launch their Downtown Summer Flick series; we’d like to send an enormous bid of thanks to DC Music Download for their top tier PR support; thank you to our community and media partners: Lil SoSo Productions, 202creates, DC Funk Parade, Listen Local First DC, Zipcar, Boss Shepherd’s, Pret-A-Manger, the Mayor’s office on African American Affairs for their marketing and promotional support; props to everyone who’s helped to spread the word and shared their experience(s); and we cannot thank you enough to the individuals who’ve attended one, some, and, in some cases, all four screenings.
Keep in mind that we’ve still got more events and programming coming and this is just the first so stay tuned, and in the meantime for all SHAOLIN JAZZ info click here and to follow us on social media click: instagram, facebook, and twitter.
We, of course, have provided an event recap and to add to the experience we’ve added photos from attendees. To check out the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
“Hip-hop has a real focus on authenticity, but I hadn’t seen the authentic martial arts combined with hip-hop. As a martial artist coming into hip-hop, I really felt like I was embodying the mantra of rap is a martial art.” – Philippe Prosper
SHAOLIN JAZZ got a chance this week to chop it up with internationally decorated kung-fu artist and rapper, Philippe Prosper, aka Rap is A Martial Art.
It’s been a great ride and we hope you can join us next Tues (6.27.17) as we screen Big Trouble in Little China – the fourth and FINAL film of the Downtown Summer Flicks x CAN I KICK IT? series, with the Downtown DC Bid. As usual, the screening will take place at Freedom Plaza, free gourmet popcorn will be provided by Pret – A Manger and Zipcar will be providing free seat cushions. For more event info click here.
Glad so many of you got a chance to experience CAN I KICK IT? on Tues. And although each film is different, I’ve been getting an almost familial feeling as these events have progressed. Beyond this being a SHAOLIN JAZZ experience, we like to think of these as cultural experiences for people to enjoy. To view the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
Even though it was a heater of a day it was great to see some familiar faces as well as some new ones yesterday at Freedom Plaza. Thank you to everyone who attended (we certainly hope that you enjoyed the experience), props to DowntownDC for holding everything down, and much appreciated to all of our media partners and everyone who’s helped spread the word.
Now, if you haven’t been able to attend we certainly hope that you can make one, as next Tues June 20th we’ll be screening Barry Gordy’s timeless classic The Last Dragon starring Vanity and Taimak.
Also on for next week, join us for a special Axel F set prior to the screening. DJ Stylus will set the vibe with an early 80’s mix and special AxelF “treats” will be on hand to sweeten the night. For more on AxelF log onto: www.axelfparty.com.
