Our final CAN I KICK IT?, of the Hudson River Parks’ Hudson RiverFlicks outdoor screening series, couldn’t have been more hip-hop (from its early beginnings), an exercise in resourcefulness, or DIY.
The passing weather made it impossible for us to conduct the screening at the designated location, so the team at Hudson River Parks had a plan B: take an empty hanger/warehouse space that they never activate that had only 1 working light, bring in a generator for power, use one of the exposed bring walls for a screen, open up the garage doors, and bring chairs and the A/V equipment. The result was a uniquely memorable experience that was intensified by a raw space in New York. Classic.
The only downside were the people who could not make it due to our quick location change as well as those who were unfortunately turned away, as we reached our 200 max capacity very early.
We’ve had an incredibly fun run with the two CAN I KICK IT? screenings that we were fortunate to conduct as apart of Hudson River Parks’ series and we’re hopeful to come back next year.
Thanks again to Hudson River Parks for bringing us, props to everyone who helped, salute to everyone who spread the word, and thank you to everyone who attended.

As our first CAN I KICK IT?, featuring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, outside of the U.S. – Vancouver definitely “got it” and the good-times ensued. The location, which was an historic outdoor plaza called Van Art Gallery North Plaza, felt like home with it being similar to Freedom Plaza (back in D.C.), with its smooth stone surfaces, ledges, and steps, which was also home to the city’s skateboarders. Insert some great food trucks and popcorn and we were ready to go!
In addition to the movie, scores of attendees, both young and old, enjoyed our makers-station where you could create your piece of art using a stencil (turntable, ninja, boom-box, or Bruce Lee) and spray paint. We love employing the makers-station whenever possible so people can participate in the event and have a meaningful and tangible memory of our experience.
And what’s a CAN I KICK IT? event without live demos, so the DVBIA brought in Shape Shifter Studio who not only conducted BBoy workshops, which got the crowd dancing, but also excited the audience with amazing BBoy exhibitions. We, in-turn, reached out to Lions MMA who sent two of their most celebrated members Kia and Sean who rocked attendees with a spirited power-driven demo.
Thank you to the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association for bringing us out, props to both Shape Shifter Studio and Lions MMA for conducting the workshops and exhibitions, and salute to everyone who attended, especially those who’ve been longtime SHAOLIN JAZZ supporters.

Our CAN I KICK IT? screening of KILL BILL Vol. 1 at The Cary Theater, in Cary, NC. proved to be one for the books. We enjoyed a nearly sold-out show and received one of the warmest receptions to date from attendees who were thrilled to discuss various stand-out moments of theirs from our remixed/live soundtrack version of the cult classic film.
Thank you to The Cary Theater for both bringing us out and for their generous hospitality, props to everyone who helped spread the word, and a huge thanks to everyone who attended and shared their positive sentiments. We certainly hope that we can come to the town of Cary and The Cary Theater.
For our next CAN I KICK IT? we’ll be in Vancouver, Wed. Aug. 7th, featuring 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For more info click here.

Its been great to see how things have been building with our quarterly residency at Creative Alliance in Baltimore and our most recent CAN I KICK IT?, where we screened Big Trouble in Little China, is proof-positive of that stride. Baltimore has a unique creative perspective and their arts and music scenes have always been accepting of a wide range of sub-genres for both visual art and live music.
And we’re pleased to announce that we’ll now be conducting CAN I KICK IT? at Creative Alliance every two months, so stay tuned for our September date, as we’ll be bringing you a popular yet cult-classic film from the 80’s starring some of that era’s most coveted action stars. We have to admit – we’ll be stepping a bit outside of our wheel-house with this movie, but it certainly falls in-line with our aesthetic.
Thanks again to the Creative Alliance for bringing us to their space and thank you to everyone who attended. For the full recap click Read the rest of this entry
