DREAM GIRLS – NYC Interviews: Laura Weyl

laura4What’s your name and where are you from?

Laura Weyl, from the Palo Alto in the Bay Area, California.

What do you do?

I am a multi-media artist, primarily focused on photography, filmmaking, acting, modeling, and projection art. I try to associate with and observe very diverse and divergent assortments of humans in my daily life.

Talk about style, who or what are some of your style influences?

Frida Kahlo is my style muse and role model. I tend to look toward powerful, iconic women of bygone eras as my style icons as opposed to modern style icons. Another big influence is Maya Deren, an experimental female filmmaker from the 1940s. These women represent archetypes of strength and sexual creativity.

My name is Whitney Leigh Brown aka Rue Brown. I’m from Washington D.C.

What do you do?

I’m a singer/songwriter/dancer/host

Talk about style, who or what are some of your style influences?

My style is influenced by everything around me. I grew up training as a professional dancer and studied classical ballet for over 20 years, also studied lots of musical theater at an early age. My mom was a jazz and blues singer so I spent a lot of my childhood in nightclubs listening to her sing and seeing how it affected people, made them smile and cheer, that always intrigued me, moving people with energy that only you possess.

DREAM GIRLS – NYC Interviews: Melanie J.B. Charles

mel1What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Melanie J-B Charles aka D’flower and I’m from BK by way of Haiti

What do you do?

I’m an artist. Singer/songwriter/producer/flutist and actress.

Talk about style, who or what are some of your style influences?

I call my style “Pepe Redefined”. In Haiti, most people can’t afford nice new store bought clothes.  So Haiti gets these shipments of second hand weird clothes shipped from the US called “Pepe”[pronounced  “pet pet” but without the T ] . People usually wear mismatched patterns and colors; basically whatever they can find. My style intrinsically has been really influenced by that. I love colors. I hate matching, I love wearing things no else is and I love being comfortable!

What role does music play in your life?

Music is my everything. Everything I do leads back to music. Music is not only what I create but also my therapy. There are times when hearing Miles Davis play can literally give me hope.

SHAOLIN JAZZ DREAM GIRLS – NYC Edition for SHAOLIN JAZZ Apparel (Summer 2014 / Part 1)

dream_girls_nyc_logos Introducing the next installment of the SHAOLIN JAZZ DREAM GIRLS series with DREAM GIRLS – NYC.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, DREAM GIRLS is a nod to the 90′s female Hip-Hop head, who is just as knowledgeable, confident, participatory, and literate in Hip-Hop culture as her male counterparts – essentially a male Hip-Hop head’s ‘Dream Girl.’

Similar to our DREAM GIRLS – DC edition, our NYC photo shoot highlights a day in the life of four friends (during a summer in Brooklyn, NY), Hip-Hop enthusiasts, who are rocking product  from our newly expanded range of SHAOLIN JAZZ Apparel.

Instead of women playing “the-back” the DREAM GIRLS are in the forefront: hardcore yet tempting, raw yet feminine, strong yet alluring, casual yet striking.

Welcome to Part 1 of  our Summer 2014 DREAM GIRLS – NYC photo shoot.  Shot by Chris Carr (Eat The Cake NYC), featuring Dyesha Hicks, Melanie J.B. Charles, Boshia Rae-Jean, Whitney Brown, and Laura Weyl.
