DOCUMENT the Fresh – Opening Reception and Panel Discussion Recap

To be honest, I’m never sure what to expect when I develop anything creative and DOCUMENT the Fresh was no exception, especially considering the content and the intent of the exhibition.

Vickey, Dafna, and Teri really delivered what I was hoping for which were three distinct perspectives via the photos they’ve shot.

The opening reception and panel discussion for DOCUMENT the Fresh really took me by surprise.  Supreme turnout at the opening and the panel discussion turned out well too with a nice gathering of people who were really engaged by the photographers, their stories, their processes, and personalities.

Thanks to everyone that attended both events and shouts to Erwin, Stevenson, Ernest, and Jessica (Lamont Bishop Gallery) for agreeing to host the exhibition, Chris (Heineken), Keri-Ann (vitaminwater), Akil (Belvedere), Kat (Lil Soso Productions), Alexis (Madison Davenport),  Cherisse, Brandon (Fusicology), Winston (Couch Sessions), Tewodross (Art 408 Visual CultureM3: MCs, Mics and Metaphors), Roddy (Humble Monarch Media & Design), Sonya (UKS), and everyone that tweeted or dropped a Facebook post.

If you’re in the DC area or will be the exhibition will be up until Saturday November, 26th so make sure to stop by.

DOCUMENT the Fresh – Interviews: Dafna Steinberg

Who or what first got you interested in photography?

When I was about 7, my mom gave me my very first camera. Then when I was 13, I learned how to work in a darkroom. Needless to say, I’ve been shooting for a very long time.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

When I was a kid, I used to set up all my stuffed animals in my room and do group portraits with them.

What is it about photography that you most enjoy?

Photography allows me to show others how I see the world. I tend to notice things that a lot of people tend to pass by. I like photographing things in fragments which is why so many of my photos are detail shots.

Talk about the first event and or concert that you shot.  How’d it go?

The first event I ever shot, I was still in high school. I was living in Zaragoza, Spain and snuck a point and shoot camera into a Carlos Santana concert. Somehow, I managed to get myself into the front row and got some great shots. All without getting caught!  For the entire read click Read the rest of this entry

DOCUMENT the Fresh – Interviews: Vickey Ford

Who or what first got you interested in photography?

Music, Fashion & my Mom.  Music has always played a big part of my life.  My mother would attend concerts and shared her photos & stories.   My mother took me to see New Edition, the music & the lights …just the whole vibe and emotions that I felt instilled a love of music in me. And I wanted to capture that.  Then the hip-hop scene further intensified my love for photography.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

The usual stuff; family, rocks, my feet but that’s when I was a little girl.  When I picked up the camera again as an adult it was my love for live concerts, wanting to capture that moment.

What is it about photography that you most enjoy?

Capturing the essence of that moment—whatever it is.

DOCUMENT the Fresh – Interviews: Rosina “Teri” Memolo

Who or what first got you interested in photography?

My mom had a dark room as early as I can remember and a great set of Nikon SLRs that I still have. While other parents were charting their kid’s growth by plopping their hands in plaster, my mom was making monoprints of our hands in the darkroom on photographic paper. I was always around red safe lights and trays of chemicals. I used to love to hang out in the dark and watch the image appear in the developer like it was magic.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

I remember shooting my mom’s wedding when I was 12 with my little disc camera and the pics turning out really well (a feat since the disc negatives were tiny).

I remember some beautiful black and white shots on the mall with dramatic lighting, scenes of the museums and kids playing. The pics turned out nothing like a typical 13 year old’s, except for the clowning pics of my friend, me and a box of Little Debbies.

Mostly, I remember taking close ups of objects. I really liked playing with the depth of field of the macro lenses, of course I had no idea what I was doing, it just was fun to me.

What is it about photography that you most enjoy?

I enjoy the challenge of making the image in the camera what I see in real life or what I want to see. I also enjoy telling a story with photographs.
