DOCUMENT the Fresh – Photography Exhibition / Closing Reception / Tuesday October 29th / The Bishop (BKNYC)

October 1, 2013 1 comment

closing_flyer1Due to the overwhelmingly high positive response received from the opening reception as well as interest from the gallery and the photographers – doing a closing reception felt like a no-brainer.

In addition to the standard closing reception fare, there will also be a panel discussion (moderated by one of The Bishop’s owners – Stevenson Dunn) featuring the participating photographers who’ll discuss their backgrounds, processes, motivations, and other musings.  Attendees will also be treated to complimentary Heineken (6-7pm).  For more info click here.

pic14Very happy with how everything turned out with the NYC opening reception of DOCUMENT the Fresh.  Everything clicked – the space, the art, the music, the people – meaning the aesthetic was on-point  Thanks to everyone that came out, The Bishop and their phenomenal staff (Teneille, Erwin, Ernest, and Stevenson), Alexis (Madison Davenport PR), Team Epiphany for the Heineken hook up (Brandon, Susan, Coltrane, Lisa), Oscar (Red Bull) and of course – the photographers: Vickey Ford/Sneakshot, Chris Carr, Mariama Rafetna, and Steve-o and Brian David Harris whose on-site photos brought the Community Wall to life.

pic2Who or what first got you interested in photography?
I was always really interested in photography. The first photo i took was in 2010. It was a We Buy Gold sign in Mississippi. After that i was hooked, I bought a Canon 7D  and started documenting everything. I don’t really consider myself a photographer though, I just wanted to have something to look back at 20 years from now. Something I could show my kids.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?
Early on, I had this infatuation with We Buy Gold signs. So I started shooting different signs in each city I was in. But most of the time it was my friends who happened to be artists as well.

I can’t say exactly, I just always remember having this supreme fascination for “a great picture” when looking at family albums, magazines – and just wanting to be the type of person who can create such a phenomenon. As I got older – especially as my father (a musician) noticed my interest in photography – told me he used to shoot professionally during his childhood-young adult years, as he was mentored by his step-father who was a professional artist and photographer as well.

intrvw2Who or what first got you interested in photography?

Music, Fashion & my Mom.  Music has always played a big part of my life.  My mother would attend concerts and shared her photos & stories.  My mother took me to see New Edition, the music & the lights …just the whole vibe and emotions that I felt instilled a love of music in me. And I wanted to capture that.  Then the hip-hop scene further intensified my love for photography.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

The usual stuff; family, rocks, my feet but that’s when I was a little girl.  When I picked up the camera again as an adult it was my love for live concerts, wanting to capture that moment.

What is it about photography that you most enjoy?

Capturing the essence of that moment—whatever it is.

DOCUMENT the Fresh – Concert & Event Photography Exhibition / Friday September 20 / The Bishop (BKNYC)

docfreshnyc_group_flyerAbout two months ago, E(rwin) from The Bishop, one of the owners of the gallery that hosted the first DOCUMENT the Fresh (recap), told me about their new space in Brooklyn and asked if I’d be down to do another.  I was hesitant, as our SHAOLIN JAZZ L!VE date at BB King NYC was coming (which was a big deal) and our SHAOLIN JAZZ college lectures were starting shortly thereafter so I wasn’t sure if I’d have the time or head-space to coordinate a second show (note – I normally plan 6-8 months, at minimum, in advance for my events).  But after some additional talks and me always enjoying doing events in NYC I was down.

This year’s lineup of photogs have an amazing range of work and if this show will be anything like the first exhibition then it should make for another strong presentation.   This year’s lineup includes Vickey Ford/Sneakshot, Chris Carr, Mariama Rafetna, and Steve-O.  I’m also happy to announce that Heineken and Red Bull will be providing complimentary product and The Stark Life will be providing media support.  Brian Harris will also be on deck shooting live event photos for our community wall.

DOCUMENT the Fresh – Opening Reception and Panel Discussion Recap

November 7, 2011 2 comments

To be honest, I’m never sure what to expect when I develop anything creative and DOCUMENT the Fresh was no exception, especially considering the content and the intent of the exhibition.

Vickey, Dafna, and Teri really delivered what I was hoping for which were three distinct perspectives via the photos they’ve shot.

The opening reception and panel discussion for DOCUMENT the Fresh really took me by surprise.  Supreme turnout at the opening and the panel discussion turned out well too with a nice gathering of people who were really engaged by the photographers, their stories, their processes, and personalities.

Thanks to everyone that attended both events and shouts to Erwin, Stevenson, Ernest, and Jessica (Lamont Bishop Gallery) for agreeing to host the exhibition, Chris (Heineken), Keri-Ann (vitaminwater), Akil (Belvedere), Kat (Lil Soso Productions), Alexis (Madison Davenport),  Cherisse, Brandon (Fusicology), Winston (Couch Sessions), Tewodross (Art 408 Visual CultureM3: MCs, Mics and Metaphors), Roddy (Humble Monarch Media & Design), Sonya (UKS), and everyone that tweeted or dropped a Facebook post.

If you’re in the DC area or will be the exhibition will be up until Saturday November, 26th so make sure to stop by.

Who or what first got you interested in photography?

When I was about 7, my mom gave me my very first camera. Then when I was 13, I learned how to work in a darkroom. Needless to say, I’ve been shooting for a very long time.

Early on what were some of the first things that you began to document?

When I was a kid, I used to set up all my stuffed animals in my room and do group portraits with them.

What is it about photography that you most enjoy?

Photography allows me to show others how I see the world. I tend to notice things that a lot of people tend to pass by. I like photographing things in fragments which is why so many of my photos are detail shots.

Talk about the first event and or concert that you shot.  How’d it go?

The first event I ever shot, I was still in high school. I was living in Zaragoza, Spain and snuck a point and shoot camera into a Carlos Santana concert. Somehow, I managed to get myself into the front row and got some great shots. All without getting caught!  For the entire read click Read more…
